Canada's 2 Billion Tree Program

Forest Restoration and Conservation for Climate Action

Project Overview

As part of the Nature-Based Climate Solutions Consortium of Canada, we have supported the government's commitment to actively address the twin biodiversity and climate crises, in part, through the planting of trees in Canada. We advocated for a well-designed, implemented and monitored tree planting program that can make a meaningful contribution to Canada's ambitious nature and climate commitments.

Canada's Commitments

Canada has made ambitious commitments to:

  • Halt and reverse the loss of biodiversity by 2030
  • Support the full recovery of nature
  • Achieve net-zero emissions by 2050

Our Role

We provided technical and policy recommendations to Natural Resources and Environment and Climate Change Canada on the Two Billion Trees Program to ensure that large-scale tree planting programs:

  • Contribute meaningfully to forest restoration objectives
  • Support biodiversity conservation goals
  • Strengthen climate adaptation measures
  • Align with nature-based climate solutions

Project Significance

The 2 Billion Tree Program represents a major investment in forest restoration and climate action. Through strategic tree planting that incorporates both scientific knowledge and nature-based climate solutions principles, Canada can advance multiple environmental and climate objectives simultaneously.
